Giants Acquire J.J. McCarthy in Trade Amid Quarterback Shuffle

The New York Giants have acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings, sending a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to Minnesota. The move comes as the Giants navigate a quarterback situation impacted by an injury to Jaxson Dart and with Jameis Winston currently starting. Head coach John Harbaugh expressed enthusiasm about the addition, stating, “I think he’s a strong young quarterback … very talented player and he’s gonna make us a stronger football team. I think it makes us better.”

McCarthy, who was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had a turbulent tenure with the Vikings. The Giants sought a more experienced backup option after Dart was placed on injured reserve following knee surgery, and the team's current backup, Jake Haener, has only one NFL start. Haener will be waived and is expected to re-sign to the practice squad.

While Winston remains the starter, the team will evaluate whether McCarthy or Haener will serve as his primary backup for the upcoming game against the Cardinals. Harbaugh affirmed his confidence in Winston, stating, “Jameis will be the starter for as long as I can see into the future… I know that I have complete confidence that Jameis is going to play a great football game on Sunday and our guys are going to play great around him.”

McCarthy, 23, previously played for coach Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh's brother, at Michigan, where he had a successful collegiate career, including a national championship. Head coach John Harbaugh indicated that his evaluation of McCarthy was independent of his brother's endorsement, noting he paid close attention to Michigan's program. “He was a top 10 pick for a reason,” Harbaugh said. “I know he didn’t hold on to that job in Minnesota and that’s why he’s available.”

The Giants had previously scouted McCarthy extensively before the 2024 draft, where they held the No. 6 overall pick. They ultimately selected wide receiver Malik Nabers after passing on McCarthy, whom they reportedly had a second-round grade on, with reservations about his mental makeup and ability to handle the New York market.

Discussions about acquiring a new quarterback began after Dart's injury in Week 2. General manager Joe Schoen and the scouting department reportedly brought McCarthy's name forward, with Harbaugh noting, “They felt very strongly he was going to be a good option.” He added, “He can throw it, he can run it, he makes plays.”

McCarthy's NFL career began with an injury that sidelined him for his entire rookie season. After being named the Vikings' starting quarterback, his performance was inconsistent. He experienced injuries including a high ankle sprain and a fractured hand. In 10 starts, he completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, with a passer rating of 72.6. The Vikings later signed Kyler Murray, pushing McCarthy to third on the depth chart.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and 219 pounds, McCarthy offers the Giants a more mobile alternative to Winston. Winston, starting in place of Dart, completed 11 of 22 passes for 118 yards in a low-scoring 12-7 victory over the Titans. The team has not indicated that Winston's starting position is under immediate threat, though this could change based on future performance and how quickly McCarthy integrates into the offensive system.
