Giant Pandas Return to Atlanta Zoo Following US-China Summit
Two pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, embarked on a journey from China to their new 10-year home at Zoo Atlanta.
Two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, departed Chengdu, China, early Sunday for Zoo Atlanta as part of a diplomatic agreement between the two nations. The loan of the pandas was announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his three-day summit with U.S. President Trump in Washington.
This initiative marks the return of giant pandas to Atlanta after the zoo's last pandas departed in 2024. The agreement for the pandas' arrival was initially disclosed in April, without a specific timeline.
Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, both born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, will reside at Zoo Atlanta for a decade. Ping Ping is described as having distinct dark circles around his eyes, while Fu Shuang is noted for a slightly protruding forehead.
The loan of giant pandas has historically served as a diplomatic tool for China, utilized to foster goodwill between nations. President Xi highlighted the panda loan program as a symbol of friendship between China and the United States.
