Gerry Kelly, a prominent broadcaster for BBC Radio Ulster and former UTV presenter, has died at the age of 77. Known for his warmth and interviewing skills, Kelly was a familiar voice to many across Northern Ireland.

Throughout his career, Kelly conducted interviews with a wide array of notable individuals. One frequently cited moment was his interview with an eight-year-old Rory McIlroy, during which the young golfer was filmed chipping balls into a washing machine. He interviewed "many hundreds of people across decades," according to deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly.

Little-Pengelly paid tribute to Kelly, calling him "a face and a voice that so many generations across Northern Ireland were familiar with." She described him as "a much loved presenter with a huge character" and offered her condolences to his family and friends.

Broadcaster William Crawley also shared his reflections, stating that Kelly "had a rare gift for drawing out a guest with deep curiosity and genuine warmth; he made interviews feel like real conversations." Crawley added that Kelly "inspired, encouraged and mentored other broadcasters too," characterizing him as "a big star who was always a gentleman."

In 2018, Kelly disclosed that he had been diagnosed with cancer two years prior.
