Gerrit Cole Eager for Playoff Return After Tommy John Recovery
Yankees ace Gerrit Cole expresses renewed appreciation for the postseason after missing last year due to Tommy John surgery, anticipating his ALDS start against the Rays.
Gerrit Cole is poised to make his postseason return for the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series against the Rays, marking a significant milestone after his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Cole, who missed the entire 2025 postseason following the procedure, described his current playoff appearance as a "second bite of the apple."
"This time around, I have a different perspective," Cole stated. "Having missed it last year to now being right in the thick of it. To overcome the obstacles from the surgery and maintain my performance and be in this position after a lot of hard work, it means a little more this year."
Cole joined the Yankees in December 2020 with the primary goal of bringing a World Series title to his childhood team. After falling short in the 2024 World Series, his plans were derailed by his UCL tear the following spring training. Now, at 36 years old, he believes the team has a strong opportunity to pursue another championship.
The Yankees' rotation is considered a key strength as they face the Tampa Bay Rays in the best-of-five ALDS, a more challenging series than their recent two-game sweep of the Red Sox in the wild-card round. Throughout the season, the Yankees' starting pitchers encountered various injury concerns, including Cole's return from Tommy John surgery in May, Carlos Rodón's early-season absence due to elbow surgery, and Max Fried's battle with a bone bruise in his left elbow.
However, as the playoffs commence in early October, the rotation appears to be in optimal health and readiness. "The mix of all of us looks good," Cole said. "We have four or five unique arms, with completely different stuff and it’s elite."
While the Yankees have not yet announced the specific rotation order for the ALDS, Cole and Rodón are expected to pitch early in the series, with Cam Schlittler potentially slated for Game 2 to be available for a Game 5 start. "However they draw it up, I think we’re in a good spot," Cole commented. "Carlos and I will just take the ball and we all have our own unique ways of doing it."
Cole also noted the team's overall flexibility, evident in the wild-card series where multiple players shifted positions. The team's ability to perform without key players was highlighted by their performance in the wild-card series despite the absence of Aaron Judge, who is still recovering from a calf strain. This contrasts with the 2023 season, when Judge's injury contributed to the team missing the playoffs.
"It’s taken all of us,'' Cole said. "We found a way to thrive with a hand behind our back … [and] we have a lot of different ways to beat you."
Cole anticipates contributing to the team's success in the upcoming series, having last pitched in the postseason during the 2024 loss to the Dodgers.
