Germany Indicts Seven Suspects in Hamas Plot to Attack Jewish Targets

Seven individuals have been indicted in Germany on allegations of securing weapons and ammunition for the Hamas terrorist organization, with the stated goal of launching attacks in Europe. The German federal prosecutor's office announced the indictments, revealing that the suspects were arrested between October 2025 and May 2026. The alleged plot aimed to coincide with the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.

The indictment details that the group amassed a functional automatic rifle, 13 pistols, and over 700 rounds of ammunition. Prosecutors stated that the planned attacks were intended for early October 2025 and were to target representatives of Israel, individuals of Jewish faith, or those with pro-Israel views in Germany or Austria.

Among the indicted are individuals with German, Danish, and Lebanese nationalities, as well as one Bulgarian national. German privacy laws prevent the full last names of suspects from being published. One of the indicted suspects, Mohammed A., is accused of transporting some of the weapons to Vienna and storing them there.

According to German newspaper Die Welt, one of the accused was reportedly working as a confidential informant for Germany's domestic intelligence agency, allegedly failing to disclose the full extent of his involvement in obtaining ammunition for the group. The Federal Ministry of the Interior confirmed that Hamas has been banned from operating in Germany since November 2023, and Hezbollah since April 2020, stating that their activities violate German criminal law and international understanding.

The ministry noted that the October 7th attack and the subsequent conflict in Gaza continue to impact the security situation in Germany and Europe, with heightened abstract threat levels and increased agitation on social media inciting hatred against Jews and Israel. German intelligence reports indicated a growing number of Hamas operatives in Germany, with figures rising from an estimated 450 in 2023 to 650 in 2025. The reports also noted the presence of 1,250 Hezbollah operatives in Germany.

Experts have highlighted the ongoing threat posed by Hamas in Europe. Matthew Levitt, a scholar on Hezbollah and Hamas, stated that Hamas continues to plot in Europe under the oversight of senior Qassam Brigades officials in Lebanon, with direct ties to senior Hamas leadership. He cited a previous German indictment in 2024 of alleged Hezbollah terrorists planning attacks against a U.S. military base and Israel's embassy, with materials suggesting Hamas operatives were considering specific targets in Germany, including the Israeli embassy in Berlin and the U.S. Ramstein Air Base.

Israel's Ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, warned that Germany has transitioned from being a retreat for Hamas to an active terrorist target, emphasizing the need for a coordinated response to Hamas's ideology and terrorism.
