Germany has stated that Russia was responsible for a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August, which involved a drone carrying an explosive device discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the attack as following a "well-established pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe" and indicated that Germany anticipates further targeting.
The drone was found on August 4, and investigators suspect a second drone may have collided with a cargo aircraft nearby. A third drone was reportedly discovered near the airport approximately ten days later. The drone found on August 4 failed to explode due to a likely faulty detonator.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is a significant hub for military transport for Germany and NATO allies, and it also serves as a base for Ukraine's Antonov Airlines. In response to the incident, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the termination of the contract for the Russian House in Berlin, an entity frequently cited by observers for espionage and propaganda activities.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed full solidarity with Germany, stating, "The evidence is clear. And I welcome the measures announced by Germany in response." The issue is scheduled for discussion at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland.
Russia has consistently denied any involvement in such incidents.
