German Steakhouse Heiress Trial Sparks Espionage Scandal

A high-security courtroom in Hamburg has been the stage for a trial spanning 15 months, focusing on Christina Block, heir to the popular German steakhouse chain Block House. Block is accused of orchestrating the violent abduction of her children from Denmark during a bitter custody dispute. The case has since entangled German intelligence, leading to the arrest of the country's former intelligence chief, August Hanning, on charges of treason and espionage.

Prosecutors allege that Christina Block, along with a family lawyer and an Israeli national identified as Jonathan G, organized the forcible abduction of her two youngest children in late 2023 or early 2024. According to the indictment, the children, then aged 10 and 13, were ambushed and beaten at their father Stephan Hensel's home in Denmark. They were allegedly driven towards the German border, had their mouths taped, and the girl's hands were tied before being taken to a campervan in Baden-Württemberg. Block is said to have picked them up on January 2, 2024, and brought them to her home in Hamburg.

Block, her lawyer Andreas Costard, and Jonathan G face charges including abduction of minors, grievous bodily harm, and unlawful detention. Block's partner and three others are charged with aiding and abetting. All deny wrongdoing, with the exception of Jonathan G, who claims he believed he was participating in a rescue operation.

The trial stems from years of legal conflict between Block and her ex-husband, Stephan Hensel. Following their separation, the children initially lived with Block in Hamburg. After Hensel moved to Denmark, the children visited him regularly. In 2021, the two youngest children were not returned to Hamburg as agreed. While a Hamburg court ruled Christina Block had custody, a Danish court in February 2023 determined that the children, despite being brought to Denmark unlawfully, could not be returned to their mother. Hensel was subsequently charged with abduction of minors, a case that is still pending.

Christina Block denies knowledge of any abduction plans, suggesting the Israeli security team acted independently. Her defense contends that Hensel sought revenge. David Barkay, identified as the head of the Israeli security team and a former Mossad agent, testified that Block and Costard were aware of the planned operation, though he admitted not sharing all details due to distrust.

The connection to August Hanning, Germany's former spy chief, reportedly relates to an earlier attempted abduction in 2022. While Hanning is not charged in the current Block case, investigators searching his home discovered evidence suggesting he was involved in acquiring approximately 2,000 documents from his former chief of staff and passing state secrets to foreign powers. Hanning, 80, is currently in custody facing charges of treasonous espionage, which his lawyer dismisses as unfounded.

The trial of Christina Block has been subject to numerous delays. The current proceedings are on hold for two weeks after a key witness, Hensel's new wife, failed to appear in court.
