German Politicians Attend UK Parliamentary Committee Meeting Under New Treaty

Seven German politicians attended a meeting of the House of Commons foreign affairs committee, an event described as "unique and historic" by the committee's Labour chairman, Dame Emily Thornberry.

The presence of the German delegation was facilitated by the Kensington Treaty, a recently ratified agreement signed by Sir Keir Starmer and Andy Burnham. The treaty includes provisions for cooperation on defense, immigration, and school visits, and also permits joint committee meetings.

The delegation was led by Armin Laschet, a former candidate for German chancellor, and included members of the Bundestag. Dame Emily Thornberry welcomed the group, stating, "Germany is and always has been a key ally." The German ambassador was also present at the meeting.

During the session, the politicians discussed the Kensington Treaty. Fleur Anderson MP questioned the visitors' views on the treaty, while Laschet offered a positive assessment of UK-German relations, noting increased cooperation on defense.

Some participants raised concerns about the implications of Brexit. Awet Tesfaiesus, identified as a Greenish-type MP, first mentioned Brexit, stating, "We regret the decision but accept the decision." Stefan Keuter of the Alternative for Deutschland party expressed a positive view of Brexit, congratulating the UK on leaving the European Union and wishing Germany could do the same. Keuter also advocated for resuming oil and gas purchases from Russia.

Edward Morello (Liberal Democrat) inquired about Brexit, to which Laschet responded that while Brexit was detrimental, UK-German relations had strengthened, citing defense cooperation. He also commented on the EU's economic influence.

Adis Ahmetovic, a social democrat, praised Andy Burnham and stated that Brexit was "not the best answer." Dame Emily Thornberry reportedly reassured the German delegation about the possibility of a debate on the UK rejoining the EU.

The attendance of foreign politicians in a Westminster parliamentary hearing, with a status described as equal to elected MPs, has raised questions about parliamentary sovereignty. The event occurred on October 13, 2026.
