German Chancellor Visits Kyiv Amid Intensified Russian Attacks

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to demonstrate support as Russia intensifies its aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities. Merz's visit underscores Germany's commitment to Ukraine's defense amid a critical phase of the conflict.

"Ukraine is facing decisive weeks. That is why I traveled to Kyiv today with the message: You can rely on us," Merz stated on X, formerly Twitter. He emphasized that Germany's own security is linked to the outcome of the war.

During his visit, Merz is scheduled to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha indicated that the discussions would focus on strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities and resilience, as well as on shared European security.

The intensification of attacks comes as Russia has been targeting cities across Ukraine with ballistic missiles and drones, weapons that are difficult to intercept. Russia's Foreign Ministry stated on Saturday that it would continue to conduct "mass retaliatory strikes" on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, advising foreign nationals and diplomats to leave the country. A similar warning was issued in May.

Over the weekend, a Russian drone struck Kyiv's Northern Bridge over the Dnipro River. Social media footage depicted the drone hitting the bridge and the subsequent explosion as vehicles crossed it. Information regarding casualties was not immediately available.

These strikes follow a week in which Russian assaults led to the full or partial closure of three of Kyiv's six road bridges over the Dnipro River. This disruption suspended traffic and caused significant traffic jams, representing Moscow's latest effort to disrupt daily life in the Ukrainian capital.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine over four years ago. Currently, there are no clear indications of a potential peace settlement. The front lines, stretching approximately 1,250 kilometers (780 miles) through northern, eastern, and southern Ukraine, have seen largely static fighting in recent months. In parallel with the aerial assaults, Ukraine has been striking Russia's oil industry and businesses.
