Georgia's Upset Victory Over Alabama Overshadowed by Controversial No-Call

Georgia secured its first regular-season victory against Alabama in nearly two decades on Saturday night, but the 20-17 win at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa was immediately mired in controversy due to a crucial officiating decision.

With 3:28 remaining in the game and Alabama trailing by three points, quarterback Keelon Russell attempted a second-down pass to Rico Scott in the end zone. Georgia defensive back KJ Bolden made contact with Scott without appearing to play the ball, a move that many observers, including fans and broadcast analysts, believed should have been flagged for pass interference. No flag was thrown, and on the subsequent play, Russell was sacked, pushing Alabama out of field goal range. The Crimson Tide punted shortly after and did not regain possession.

ESPN/ABC rules analyst Matt Austin, reviewing a closer angle after the game, stated, "4 is definitely not playing the ball. Definitely gets there early. Ball hits him in the back. This definitely should have been a pass interference call." Despite the contentious ending, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer declined to blame the officials, saying, "We can't put the game in the situation where the officials come into play. We got to control the things we control."

However, widespread fan anger erupted online, with the clip of the no-call shared with the caption, "The refs are cheating how is this not pass interference." Fans described it as "one of the worst no calls I’ve ever seen" and drew comparisons to other controversial calls in major sporting events.

The game featured other officiating decisions that drew criticism. Earlier, an apparent helmet-to-helmet hit on Alabama wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams resulted in no targeting flag, which some fans deemed a clear violation. Additionally, an Alabama interception was overturned on review, with officials determining the ball had touched the ground. Fans pointed to these and other perceived missed calls, such as facemask and pass interference infractions, contributing to a narrative of one-sided officiating.

One commenter noted that four plays on the field were reviewed and all four were overturned, suggesting a pattern of questionable calls. The final sentiment from some observers was that Georgia was "100% gifted a win tonight and we all know it."
