The Albany Police Department in Georgia has drawn significant online criticism after seeking the public's help to identify an elderly man who found $30 on the floor of a Walmart. The department's social media posts about the incident were met with a barrage of sarcastic comments and accusations of wasting police resources.

Initially, police announced they were looking for the man after the person who dropped the money wished to press charges. However, an update to the police department's Facebook post indicated the money was returned, and the victim decided not to pursue charges. According to APD Chief Michael Persley, investigators determined that the suspect had witnessed the victim drop the money.

The public's reaction on social media largely focused on the perceived triviality of the investigation. Many users ridiculed the department for dedicating resources to a case involving a small sum of money, especially when compared to other issues within the community. Comments suggested police should focus on more serious crimes, such as the reported 23 homicides in the city and the recent arrest of five officers for misuse of surveillance cameras.

Examples of the online backlash included comments like, "Thank God you found that criminal that found $30 at Walmart. I was afraid he was going to go on a rampage!" and "I’m just thankful you guys captured that old man who found $30. I’m sleeping a bit more soundly knowing people aren’t out there just finding money like a bunch of savages."

Some users drew parallels to their own experiences, with one commenter stating they once found $8,000 in a bank envelope in a parking lot and suggesting that such a sum, unlike $30 found inside a store, would warrant reporting.

The criticism has extended beyond the original post, with subsequent posts on the Albany Police Department's page also receiving numerous comments questioning if they have "stolen $30 too."

Police asked local community for their help in identifying a man who picked up $30 dollars off the ground in a Walmart located at 2586 N. Slappey Blvd in Albany, Georgia

The incident highlights a public perception issue for the department, with many online commenters expressing frustration over the prioritization of minor incidents by law enforcement.
