Georgia Police Department Resigns En Masse Amid Mayor Dispute

The entire police department in Milner, Georgia, has resigned, citing deep-seated conflicts with the city's mayor. Police Chief Lamar Bunn and all five officers submitted their resignations, with their last day of service scheduled for October 28. City Administrator Tausha Grose also announced her resignation, effective October 30.

The mass exodus stems from allegations that Mayor Craig Timmons secretly placed a tracking device on Chief Bunn's personal truck. Bunn claims the mayor purchased and installed the device without authorization, raising concerns about potential rights violations. Bunn stated he has consulted an outside agency regarding the legality of the alleged surveillance. He also reported that Timmons, in the presence of others, asked for the device back.

During a City Council meeting, a member of the public directly questioned the mayor about the alleged tracking device. Mayor Timmons declined to comment. Chief Bunn also used the meeting to deny rumors of an affair with Grose.

Bunn expressed a loss of trust in elected officials' ability to act in the city's best interest and is reportedly considering legal action against Timmons. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, this situation is not solely about the alleged surveillance; disagreements over police overtime and proposed restrictions on officers working additional jobs also contributed to the conflict.

Council discussions had included a proposal to prevent officers from using city-owned vehicles for off-duty work, which had become another point of contention. While policy disputes were a factor, both Bunn and Grose indicated that these were not the primary reasons for their departures.

Milner's law enforcement coverage is further impacted as most volunteer reserve officers have also submitted resignations. The city now faces the challenge of securing law enforcement services and administrative coverage following these departures.

Mayor Timmons acknowledged the situation's gravity, expressing regret over the resignations and hope for a resolution. Chief Bunn stated his continued affection for the community and a desire for Milner's progress, leaving open the possibility of rescinding his resignation if circumstances improve.
