Jayden Williams, the 23-year-old mayor of Stockbridge, Georgia, has been removed from his position following allegations that he sexted a teenager. The decision came after an investigation into his conduct, which followed an earlier probe into his misuse of the city's credit card.
The city council voted to remove Williams from office, a decision confirmed on social media. Williams, who was sworn in just six months ago, admitted to exchanging explicit photos with a male high school student who had recently turned 18. He initially claimed the actions were not abnormal for someone his age.
Williams' attorney stated that his client was wrongfully removed and that the images were sent before Williams took office. At the council meeting where his removal was decided, his attorney argued that the decision was not based on evidence.
Prior to his removal, the city council had already restricted Williams' access to city vehicles, his credit card, nonpublic city facilities, and communication with city employees. He was also instructed to return city-issued keys and access cards. These restrictions were described as temporary measures pending the outcome of an investigation.
The investigation into Williams' spending habits was initiated after the city manager's office reported suspicious activity. Mayor Pro Tem Elton Alexander stated that any misuse of taxpayer dollars, regardless of the amount, is a concern.
An investigation into further allegations revealed the exchange of explicit photos. The teenager had been communicating with Williams via Instagram direct messages and text, and had discussed joining the mayor's mentorship program.
Acting Mayor Elton Alexander announced that a special election will be held within the next six months to fill the mayoral seat permanently. Williams stated he would pursue legal action to ensure a fair and transparent process.
Williams, a graduate of Clark Atlanta University with a degree in Political Science, made history last year by becoming the youngest African American mayor in Georgia. Stockbridge is a suburb of Atlanta with a population under 30,000, and the mayor's position is part-time. The nature of Williams' day job has been a subject of discussion among his colleagues.
