Georgia Governor Suspends State Fuel Tax Amid Rising Gas Prices

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency, temporarily suspending the state's motor fuel excise tax in response to soaring gas and diesel prices. The executive order, signed late Monday, aims to provide economic relief to citizens grappling with the rising cost of fuel.

The tax suspension translates to savings of 33 cents per gallon for regular gasoline and 37 cents per gallon for diesel. Kemp's office also stated the order suspends weight limits on commercial vehicles, which they argue will help reduce the cost of goods, including groceries.

As of Tuesday morning, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Georgia stood at $4.19, while diesel was $6.24 per gallon. This marks a significant increase from a year ago, when regular gas averaged $2.87 per gallon and diesel was $3.54.

The move comes as Republicans seek to retain control of key offices in the upcoming midterm elections. While Kemp is not on the ballot this year, Georgia Republicans are working to secure the governorship and the U.S. Senate seat. Current polling indicates a close race for the governorship and a slight advantage for the incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff over his Republican challenger.

The order also addresses global factors contributing to fuel price volatility. According to the governor's office, the U.S. blockade on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, coupled with regional strikes, have impacted global oil supply. Recent conflict between Russia and Ukraine targeting energy facilities has also destabilized prices, contributing to record-high U.S. diesel fuel prices.

President Donald Trump has previously suggested that gas prices would decline after the midterm elections and once the conflict in Iran concludes. Kemp, a Republican governor who previously clashed with Trump over the certification of the 2020 election results, is now taking direct action to address the economic concerns of Georgian voters.
