Rick Jackson, Georgia's Republican nominee for governor, faced criticism for his remarks on affordability during a campaign rally attended by former President Donald Trump.
During the rally, Jackson stated that "the other side talks about affordability as if that’s a solution," characterizing it as a business problem requiring "business solutions" rather than a political issue. He also claimed his opponent, Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms, sought to "cut down businesses." Jackson then pledged, "I’m going to make sure that Georgia is the best place to do business and reduce affordability to the lowest it’s ever been."
This statement appears to diverge from a recent social media clip in which Jackson had vowed to treat affordability as a "crisis." In that clip, he addressed rising grocery and gas prices without mentioning factors such as the Iran war impacting food and fuel costs.
Critics, including Keisha Lance Bottoms, quickly responded to Jackson's remarks. Bottoms suggested Jackson was being "honest with voters about his agenda to raise costs for Georgians by supporting Trump’s agenda 100%." Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger commented on a shared clip, stating "no lies detected," while journalist Zaid Jilani noted Jackson's proximity to Trump and predicted favorable responses from Democratic ad makers.
