A six-year-old Georgia girl died unexpectedly ahead of a scheduled tonsillectomy, leaving her school community mourning her loss as she was set to begin first grade. Emersyn “Emmy” Bridgers had been preparing to start her first-grade year at Euharlee Elementary School.
The Bartow County Coroner’s Office confirmed to WSB-TV2 that the surgery did not proceed as planned. Coroner Joel Guyton stated that he is awaiting medical records to determine the circumstances surrounding Emmy’s death, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an autopsy.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by Heather Smith described Emmy as “a light in every life she touched” and “such a loving child.” Smith noted on the fundraising page that Emmy’s family’s lives were “forever changed” by the events leading to her death.
The Bartow County School System issued a tribute, calling Emmy “one of a kind” and stating she will be “deeply missed.” Teachers remembered her contagious smile and a special nickname, “Little Momma,” given to her by her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Rose, for her caring nature and compassion towards others. Emmy had reportedly chosen a rose-themed outfit for the school’s Open House, and officials noted the difficulty of imagining her first-grade classroom without her.
Funeral arrangements are being made, with a motorcycle ride memorial planned. Mourners are encouraged to wear pink, Emmy’s favorite color, in her memory. A local funeral home has offered to cover funeral expenses for the family. Smith expressed gratitude for the community's support for Emmy’s family on the fundraising page.
