Georgia Ascends to Top Ranking After Narrow Victory Over Alabama
No. 2 Bulldogs secure a hard-fought 20-17 win against No. 6 Crimson Tide, positioning them for the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25.
The Georgia Bulldogs have positioned themselves as the heir apparent to the No. 1 ranking in college football following a dramatic 20-17 victory over the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide. The win, decided in the closing minutes, propelled the second-ranked Bulldogs (6-0, 4-0 in SEC play) past Alabama (5-1, 3-1) in a matchup that saw controversial officiating in the final moments.
Georgia's ground game proved effective, with Dwight Phillips Jr. leading the charge with 120 rushing yards and Bo Walker contributing 69 yards. Despite playing without leading rusher Nate Frazier, the Bulldogs amassed 206 rushing yards against the Crimson Tide. Gunnar Stockton scored both of Georgia's touchdowns, one through the air and another on the ground.
Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception. Alabama's quarterback, Keelon Russell, finished 16 of 30 for 185 yards and a touchdown, while also adding 41 rushing yards.
The game's outcome was overshadowed by a controversial pass-interference non-call. With under two minutes remaining, Georgia safety KJ Bolden appeared to interfere with an Alabama receiver on a crucial third-down play. Officials did not flag Bolden, and on the subsequent play, he sacked Russell, pushing Alabama out of field-goal range.
The Crimson Tide had a chance to regain possession, but a personal foul penalty on cornerback Dijon Lee allowed Georgia to run out the clock.
The contest was played amidst the backdrop of Hurricane Isaias, which made landfall the previous night. Despite the storm, Bryant-Denny Stadium was full, though President Trump ultimately decided not to attend the game.
Alabama wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams experienced two separate injuries during the game. He initially left in the second quarter with an apparent left leg injury after a broken-up pass in the end zone. He returned for the second half but later exited again with a potential concussion after attempting to make a catch late in the game. He finished with three receptions for 39 yards.
This victory marks Georgia's third win over Alabama in their last 11 meetings and their first regular-season victory against the Crimson Tide since 2007. With No. 1 Texas losing to Oklahoma, Georgia is poised to claim the top spot in the upcoming AP Top 25 poll.
