The rookie shortstop’s creative baserunning maneuver energized the crowd in The Bronx during a game that had little consequence, as the Rays had already secured the division title.
Lombard was on third base when Tampa Bay’s Brody Hopkins delivered a wild pitch that bounced off the backstop. Catcher Liam Hicks recovered the ball and appeared to have an easy play at the plate. However, Lombard, initially sliding feet-first, adapted mid-action upon seeing Hicks on the ground.
In a fluid motion, Lombard scrambled to his feet, took a step, and tumbled over the plate and Hicks, dragging his right hand across to score. This improbable play cut the deficit to 4-3.
His successful, unconventional score was met with an enthusiastic reaction from the Yankees dugout. Lombard continued his impactful performance in the eighth inning, hitting his seventh home run of the season to left field, which gave the Yankees a 6-4 lead.
