The New York Yankees have promoted 21-year-old shortstop prospect George Lombard Jr. to the major leagues. The team optioned Anthony Volpe to clear a roster spot for Lombard, who is set to bat eighth in his debut. His arrival has been met with significant anticipation, with some teammates and former coaches drawing parallels between him and Yankees legend Derek Jeter.
Trent Sellers, a right-handed pitching prospect who played with Lombard Jr. briefly in 2024 and 2025, predicted a Hall of Fame career for the young shortstop. "He is the next Derek Jeter," Sellers stated. "He is so, so good, and he’s so young. He’s going to be a Hall of Famer one day. That’s what I believe."
Isaac Tijerino, who coached Lombard Jr. from sixth grade through high school and was also his physical education teacher at Gulliver Prep in Florida, described him as an exceptional young man. "He was such a good kid — the type of kid that you want your daughter dating, marrying," Tijerino said. "When scouts were calling me about him, that was my description about the type of kid he was."
Lombard Jr. is now embarking on his major league career, tasked with stepping into a role that has historically carried immense pressure and expectation, especially for a Yankees shortstop.
