George Kittle Reaches Top Speed, Proving Achilles Recovery Complete
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle demonstrates full recovery with a 56-yard touchdown and a speed of nearly 20 mph, nine months after Achilles surgery.
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has silenced any doubts about his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon with a standout performance, highlighted by a 56-yard touchdown reception in the team's recent victory over the Denver Broncos.
The play, which occurred late in the fourth quarter, saw Kittle catch a screen pass from quarterback Brock Purdy and sprint across the goal line. This demonstration of speed and agility occurred just nine months after Kittle underwent surgery for the Achilles tear he sustained on January 11.
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Kittle reached a top speed of 19.86 mph during the touchdown run, the second-fastest speed recorded by a tight end in the league this season. This mirrors his past performance, as he had previously reached 20 mph on a 71-yard touchdown in 2018. Kittle had been clocked at similar speeds during his rehabilitation process, but this game-time performance served as definitive proof of his return to elite physical condition.
"It looked like he needs to carry the ball through the end zone, not watch the scoreboard with Huf chasing him," head coach Kyle Shanahan said, referencing a moment where Kittle appeared to glance at the scoreboard. "But it was a hell of a play by him and perfect timing."
The touchdown effectively sealed the 49ers' 24-14 win, coming after the Broncos had narrowed the score to a field goal. Kittle's play signals his full return to form, reassuring both the team and fans of his capabilities.
"I’d love to say I’m shocked, but I’m not. That’s just who he is," said running back Christian McCaffrey. "He attacks everything at full speed, and always has the best attitude, so it’s no shock that George Kittle is playing like George Kittle."
Kittle admitted that he felt he was still getting into game shape during the season opener. However, since then, he has been a consistent threat, scoring a touchdown in each of the three games played, accumulating four touchdowns on 14 catches for 242 yards.
Kittle's rehabilitation was guided by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed the surgery. ElAttrache had indicated that a Week 1 return was possible if Kittle attacked his rehab diligently. Kittle has credited the team's familiarity and his own approach for his swift and effective recovery. "From Week 2 and on, I had so much confidence in it and haven’t looked back since," Kittle stated.
Quarterback Brock Purdy lauded Kittle's performance, saying, "George and his speed and just who he is, I was like, ‘No one’s going to stop him.’ So that was really cool. Electric play call for Kyle to call that right then and there with them blitzing. It was just perfect timing."
