George Kittle Attributes 49ers' Early Success to Offensive Continuity
Tight end George Kittle highlights team familiarity and quarterback Brock Purdy's performance as key factors in the San Francisco 49ers' undefeated start.
The San Francisco 49ers have opened the NFL season with a 2-0 record, a strong start that tight end George Kittle attributes to the team's sustained familiarity and continuity.
"I think the biggest thing is that this is essentially like the same offense we’ve had for quite a while now," Kittle said during an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show." He emphasized the stability of the offensive line, quarterback, fullback, running back, and fellow tight ends as crucial elements.
While the wide receiver position has seen some changes, the addition of Mike Evans and the reintegration of Deebo Samuel have bolstered the unit. Evans, who has seemingly overcome previous injury setbacks, has contributed nine receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown early in the season. "When you add guys like that, it’s just so much fun," Kittle remarked about playing alongside Evans. "Every time we call a play and I know Mike has a chance of getting the ball, I’m like, ‘This is so sick — Like Brock Purdy is throwing the ball to Mike Evans and I’m blocking for him.’ What a dream come true."
Quarterback Brock Purdy has also played a significant role in the 49ers' early success. Entering Week 3, Purdy led quarterbacks with an 80.4% completion rate, including a near-perfect performance in the team's 35-13 victory over the Dolphins. San Francisco's defensive coordinator, Raheem Morris, a former Super Bowl-winning coordinator with the Rams, has also been credited with contributing to the team's strong performance.
Linebacker Fred Warner has been a standout on defense, recording 16 tackles and two forced fumbles through the first two games. However, the team has faced challenges with injuries, particularly at the wide receiver position, with Christian Kirk and De’Zhaun Stribling on injured reserve, and Ricky Pearsall sidelined for the season after knee surgery.
The 49ers face a demanding upcoming schedule, including matchups against the Broncos and Seahawks, as they aim to maintain their momentum throughout the season.
