Geno Smith's Stellar Performance Underscores Jets' Tough Loss to Lions

Detroit, MI – Quarterback Geno Smith delivered one of his best performances in his recent tenure with the New York Jets on Sunday, but it wasn't enough to secure a victory against the Lions. Smith completed 31 of 37 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions, in the 31-24 loss at Ford Field.

Despite the outcome, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn praised Smith's effort, calling it "outstanding." Tight end Jeremy Ruckert echoed the sentiment, describing Smith as a "warrior" who "stands in that pocket and delivers the ball while he gets hit." Ruckert added, "He’s a field general. We have the utmost confidence in him. We need to do a better job of keeping him upright, giving him places to throw the ball because we know that we have a quarterback that can get it to us."

Smith was sacked five times during the game, including on the final offensive play for the Jets, which resulted in a fumble. This turnover ultimately sealed the team's fate.

Smith's performance against the Lions marked a continuation of a trend where he faced opposing coaches against whom he had previously found success. Before Sunday's game, Smith had faced Lions head coach Dan Campbell twice when Smith was with the Seahawks. In those matchups, Smith held a 2-1 record, passing for over 300 yards in each game with a combined five touchdowns and one interception.

Last week, Smith faced Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, a coach he had a 4-0 record against prior to a 20-17 overtime loss.
