Geno Smith's Performance Falters as Jets Suffer Loss to Bears
Quarterback Geno Smith struggled in a 23-12 loss to the Chicago Bears, completing only 53.3 percent of his passes after a strong start to the season.
Quarterback Geno Smith experienced a significant drop in performance on Sunday, completing just 53.3 percent of his passes for 119 yards and one touchdown in the New York Jets' 23-12 defeat to the Chicago Bears. This outing contrasted sharply with his career-best performance the previous week.
Prior to Sunday's game, Smith led the NFL in completion percentage at 75.5 percent. However, against the Bears, his accuracy faltered, and the Jets' offense struggled to find a rhythm. The team held the ball for only 17 minutes during the game, with a mere 45 seconds of possession in the fourth quarter. The Jets ran only 32 offensive plays, marking a franchise low.
The game began unusually, with the Jets running only four plays in the first quarter, three of which occurred within their own 10-yard line. "It was definitely not a normal situation," Smith commented. "For us as an offense, no matter if we get it at the 25, the 35 or at the 1, you’ve got to think score. We’ve got to execute and do whatever we can to keep our defense off the field. That’s a part of playing complementary football. I think we can do a lot better job in that area."
The Jets' struggles extended to third downs, where they converted 0-for-7 attempts. Smith also appeared to be off-target with his throws, a departure from his performance in earlier games this season.
"I know he’s going to look at himself and know he should have made those plays too — that’s every player in that locker room right now," said Jets coach Aaron Glenn when asked about Smith's missed throws. "Each guy wants to be at his best every time, and sometimes, man, things can be a little off."
Despite appearing to be slightly injured in the second half, Smith stated he was fine and expressed confidence in the team's ability to rebound. "You’ve got to get back to work and you’ve got to demand it from yourself," Smith said. "It starts with the man in the mirror. You’ve got to demand it from yourself. Obviously, as a group, we can all play a lot better. I’m just looking forward to getting back to work with the guys. I have a lot of belief in this team and this offense, as well."
