Geno Smith's Late Mistakes Sink Jets in Overtime Loss to Packers

For much of Sunday afternoon, it seemed like Geno Smith might have an unexpectedly solid return to MetLife Stadium as the Jets quarterback. However, critical mistakes in the final quarter and overtime led to a demoralizing 20-17 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers. 

Smith finished the game completing 27 of 41 passes for 247 yards, one touchdown, and no turnovers. Despite these statistics, the Jets were unable to overcome his miscues. Following a disjointed end to the fourth quarter, the Jets opened overtime with possession of the ball. Two costly sacks pushed them back from their own 30-yard line to the 15, and they ultimately punted after a three-and-out. Green Bay then capitalized by kicking the game-winning field goal.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh acknowledged the decisive moments, stating, “Listen, I trust Geno. I think Geno was doing a solid job. Probably not his best.” The team also struggled with a nearly nonexistent running game and committed numerous penalties on both sides of the ball, contributing to the defeat. 

Despite these challenges, the Jets held a 10-point lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation. "We had the lead in the fourth quarter,'' Smith said. "We've just got to close the game better. We had opportunities to close out the game and didn’t capitalize on those.” When asked about potential positives to take away from the game, Smith was resolute: “I don’t really believe in moral victories. We didn’t win the game, and that’s all that matters to me.”

The Jets appeared poised to secure a different outcome, with Smith playing a role in their strong performance for much of the game. The fanbase, still buoyed by a Week 1 road win over the Titans, voiced their support for Smith, chanting his name throughout the game. "It felt good and all that,'' Smith commented on the reception. "The more important thing for me was to try to get the win today for the fans and for our team, and we didn’t get it done.”

After some early questionable passes, Smith led the Jets back into contention. He orchestrated a seven-play, 70-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown in the second quarter. Later, he scrambled for a first down on a crucial third down, setting up another touchdown drive that gave the Jets a seven-point lead late in the third quarter. 

However, after a disastrous offensive drive to start the fourth quarter, the Jets managed only a field goal on a possession that began at the Green Bay 18-yard line. When Green Bay closed the gap to a field goal, the Jets' offense struggled to gain momentum, and Smith was unable to deliver the big plays needed to seal the victory. Running back Breece Hall commented on Smith's performance, saying, “I think he always does his thing. The [running] backs and [offensive] line, I think we could’ve definitely done a little better for him in protection. I think he did as well as he could have with what he was given.” This ultimately contributed to the disheartening loss.
