Newly released police bodycam footage shows New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith stating he was the victim in an alleged altercation with his ex-girlfriend on June 21. Responding to a battery claim at Smith's South Florida home, officers interviewed the quarterback for over an hour.
Smith told police that his ex, whom he now employs, became physical after dropping off their child earlier that day. "She hit me," Smith stated in the footage. "I got a knot in the back of my head. I got a scratch on my face. I’m trying to say I don’t want her to go to jail. But if she’s trying to put me in jail, what can I do?"
Smith showed officers injuries, including a knot on the back of his head and a scratch on his face, which he attributed to him trying to move her and duck her swings. He posed for photographs documenting these injuries as an officer recorded them on an iPhone.
Conversely, the woman told responding officers that Smith assaulted her after she entered his residence to retrieve their son. She reported a cut on her hand and bruising on her arm.
Davie Police officers were unable to determine the primary aggressor at the scene and advised both parties to contact the State Attorney's Office if they wished to press charges. The initial investigation was closed at the scene but was later reopened. On July 14, the Davie Police Department closed the probe again without making any arrests.
Smith, who was traded to the Jets from the Raiders earlier this year, has not publicly commented on the incident.
