Gen Z's Scrutiny of Age Gaps in Relationships Fuels Online Debate
A generation raised with awareness of power dynamics and consent is increasingly questioning relationships with significant age differences, leading to varied opinions and intense online discussions.
A growing number of Generation Z individuals are publicly questioning and scrutinizing relationships with notable age gaps, sparking widespread debate online and offline. This trend appears to be influenced by a heightened awareness of power dynamics and consent, concepts deeply ingrained by the #MeToo movement.
On social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, Gen Z users frequently engage in discussions about the ethics of age-disparate relationships. Even when relationships are legal, many argue that they can still be ethically questionable. This scrutiny extends to celebrity pairings, which often become focal points for these conversations.
Examples frequently cited include the past relationship between Aoki Lee Simmons, then 21, and restaurateur Vittorio Assaf, then 65. Critics deemed the relationship inappropriate, with some suggesting that the argument of mutual consent can be used by individuals with predatory intentions. The notion that a 21-year-old's prefrontal cortex is not fully developed is often brought up, highlighting a perceived difference between chronological age and developmental maturity.
Other celebrity relationships drawing attention include that of actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson and filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson. They met while working on a 2009 film, when he was in his late teens and she was in her early 40s. While the couple has been married for years, their age difference has drawn criticism, with some labeling it as a case of "grooming."

Even smaller age gaps are being debated. A tweet stating that a 25-year-old would not date a 21-year-old gained significant traction. Similarly, the 10-year age gap between singer Billie Eilish, then 20, and musician Jesse Rutherford, in his early 30s, was heavily scrutinized, with one viral tweet noting the disparity in their historical contexts.
Long-standing celebrity couples are not exempt. The 11-year age gap between Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively has faced scrutiny, and even Beyoncé and Jay-Z's relationship has been re-examined, with some debating whether a 19-year-old Beyoncé was "groomed" by a then 30-something Jay-Z.
Justin Lehmiller, a research fellow at the Kinsey Institute, notes that while stigma around age-gap relationships is not new—a 2008 study found age-discrepant couples faced more social disapproval than gay or interracial couples—Gen Z's vocal and public disapproval is a more recent phenomenon. He explains that Gen Z often perceives these relationships as inherently exploitative, viewing the age difference as creating an imbalance of power. Lehmiller observes a shift in perception, with younger generations more likely to see the younger partner as a victim rather than a gold digger.
However, some experts caution against the overuse of terms like "grooming." Gigi Engle, a certified sex and relationship psychotherapist, argues that labeling diverse groups as "groomers" is a form of fear-mongering that dilutes the term's meaning. She suggests that younger people might be more afraid of manipulation due to their own developmental stage, while acknowledging that age-gap relationships have always existed and are not inherently problematic.
Individual Gen Zers express a range of views. Some, like Layla, 23, believe dating within a similar age group is preferable, citing experiences where significant age differences led to awkwardness and a lack of shared generational references. Mona, 21, finds her parents' 11-year age gap concerning and believes an 18-year-old dating a 25-year-old is unacceptable.
Conversely, others like Rei, 22, argue that power dynamics in relationships are not solely determined by age. Rei points out that factors like education and financial stability can create power imbalances regardless of age, and that the term "grooming" is being misapplied. Rei views the intense scrutiny as a potential overcorrection following the #MeToo movement, leading some to assume any non-traditional relationship is abusive.
Amelia, 24, believes that life stage and mutual accomplishment matter more than age difference, defining "grooming" specifically as an adult's pursuit of an underage individual. She cites the relationship between comedian Dane Cook and his wife, whom he met when she was a teenager, as an example of a genuinely concerning age gap. However, Amelia also feels that some Gen Z critiques can be overly paternalistic, akin to the "Swiftie" phenomenon where fans feel the need to protect adult celebrities.
