Gen Z Facing 'Sex Recession,' With Many Opting for Digital Companions

Young adults in the United States are experiencing a "sex recession," characterized by low levels of sexual activity despite moderate to high sex drives, according to a study by the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. The research surveyed 2,373 adults aged 18-29 and found that 29 percent reported having no sexual partners in the last three months, while 19 percent had never had a partner.

Researchers suggest that factors such as dating exhaustion, fear of rejection, financial strain, and shifting social norms are contributing to the decline in sexual encounters. Financial concerns were particularly significant, with 43 percent of respondents stating that monetary issues made dating or maintaining romantic relationships more difficult, and 37 percent reporting that financial stress negatively impacted their sex lives.

Many young adults are finding their intimacy needs met through alternative means, including digital connections, online sexual experiences, friendships, and AI companions. Approximately a quarter of those surveyed indicated that online interactions, such as messaging, social media, and AI partners, fulfill some of their intimacy requirements. A similar proportion reported that spending time on screens reduces their motivation to pursue real-life sexual connections.

Despite the decrease in sexual activity, the study noted that a minority of young adults expressed dissatisfaction with their sex lives, with only 18 percent reporting unhappiness. This suggests that sex may not be as central to overall well-being for this generation as previously assumed.

The study also highlighted concerns regarding sexual health practices among Gen Z. Contraceptive use, particularly condoms, was reported as inconsistent, with only 35 percent typically using them. Furthermore, about a third of respondents had never been tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

In a separate trend, a study by Twinings indicated that Gen Z is also reducing alcohol consumption, with nearly half (47 percent) of the demographic reporting that tea has replaced alcohol as their preferred beverage before significant events, compared to just 25 percent of Baby Boomers.
