California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom reported an annual income between $1.7 million and $2 million from 2022 through 2024, according to tax returns released by the governor's office. The couple paid roughly $500,000 per year in federal and state taxes during that period.

The governor's office provided more than 700 pages of tax filings spanning four years for journalists to review. Newsom's office did not release the 2025 tax returns, as the couple filed for an extension and will complete them in October.

According to the returns, the Newsoms' income has remained consistent since Newsom took office in 2019, when they reported $1.7 million in annual income. An exception occurred in 2021, when the family sold a Marin County home for nearly $6 million, realizing a profit of approximately $800,000. That year, their total income reached $4.2 million, and they paid over $1 million in federal and state taxes.

Newsom earns nearly $200,000 annually as governor. The majority of his income, however, originates from winery and restaurant businesses that he placed in a blind trust upon assuming office. The tax returns do not specify individual businesses, making it impossible to determine their financial performance.

The PlumpJack Group, a company owned by Newsom encompassing wineries and restaurants, is currently managed by his sister and cousin. Jennifer Siebel Newsom, a filmmaker, experienced financial losses most years from Girls Club Entertainment, her production company.

The Newsoms reported spending between approximately $14,000 and $44,000 annually on childcare for three of their four children. They also contributed between $40,000 and $65,000 to charities each year, primarily through monetary donations. Additionally, they donated thousands of dollars worth of clothing and other items to thrift stores and nonprofits, including approximately $45,000 worth of Armani business wear in 2022, which was given to a racial justice organization in Oakland.

This release marks the first time Newsom has made his tax returns public since 2022. The release comes amid scrutiny of the Newsoms' finances, following the announcement last month by the governor that the U.S. Justice Department had launched investigations into them, which Newsom has characterized as politically motivated.
