Gas Prices Surge Amid International Conflict; Experts Offer Savings Tips

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline has reached $4.25, according to AAA, amid fluctuating oil prices driven by international conflict. Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil, recently peaked at over $120 a barrel. The price for U.S. diesel fuel also hit a record high of $6.523 per gallon on September 22.

Experts suggest several strategies for drivers to reduce their fuel consumption and save money at the pump.

Driving Habits

Changing driving habits can significantly impact fuel efficiency. Smooth acceleration and braking, using cruise control, and reducing speed are recommended. According to GasBuddy, driving smoothly can increase miles per tank. Consumer Reports testing found that reducing speed from 65 mph to 55 mph improved fuel economy by 6 mpg for a Nissan Altima and 8 mpg for a Toyota RAV4. Driving faster, from 65 mph to 75 mph, worsened fuel economy by 6-7 mpg for the tested vehicles. Removing unnecessary weight from the vehicle, such as roof racks, also contributes to better fuel efficiency.

Tire Maintenance and Selection

Properly inflated tires are crucial for both safety and fuel economy. Underinflated tires can cause a car to work harder and consume more fuel. Temperature changes can affect tire pressure, with cooler weather causing a loss of air pressure. Investing in low rolling resistance tires can also save up to 3% in fuel costs.

Utilizing Apps and Rewards Programs

Smartphone applications such as GasBuddy, Gas Guru, and Waze can help drivers find the cheapest gas prices in their area or along their route. Some apps offer additional savings through temporary discounts or rewards programs. Many credit cards offer rewards points or cash back on gas purchases, with some experts recommending cards that provide at least 3% back at the pump. Drivers are advised to regularly check for updates to credit card rewards programs. Fuel cards and loyalty programs offered by warehouse clubs, grocery chains, and motor clubs can also provide discounts on gasoline.

Fuel Type Considerations

Experts advise drivers to avoid paying for premium gasoline if their vehicle does not require it. Most cars perform well on regular unleaded gasoline, and opting for premium when unnecessary is considered a waste of money. The average price for a gallon of premium gasoline is currently $5.24, compared to the national average of $4.25 for regular gasoline.
