Gas Prices Climb to $4.27 Per Gallon as GOP Worries Over Iran War's Impact

Gas Prices Climb to $4.27 Per Gallon as GOP Worries Over Iran War's Impact

The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has reached $4.27, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). Diesel is currently priced at $6.35 per gallon, a decrease from its record high of $6.52 in late September.

These energy costs have become a significant concern for Republicans, who are privately acknowledging that the ongoing war in Iran, which President Donald Trump has referred to as a "little detour," is negatively impacting their electoral prospects.

Campaign Concerns

Americans are expressing anger over elevated energy prices and frustration with the nearly eight-month-old conflict in Iran. President Trump had initially suggested the war would conclude within weeks. However, the protracted conflict has destabilized the global economy and intensified financial pressure on citizens already grappling with the cost of living.

An Associated Press-NORC poll released recently indicated that voters across the political spectrum desire the next Congress to prioritize reducing everyday expenses and ending the war. This sentiment presents a considerable challenge for Republican candidates in the lead-up to the November 3 elections.

Audio leaked by Axios from a private event last month revealed that Ken Paxton, a U.S. Senate candidate in Texas, expressed concerns about the war and gas prices impacting his campaign. Paxton admitted to lobbyists at a fundraising lunch in Washington, D.C., that "It's not tariffs.... It's the war, it's gas prices, it's diesel" as factors "dragging" his campaign.

Candidate Proposals

Some Republican candidates are proposing solutions to address the energy cost crisis. Ashley Hinson, a Republican Senate candidate in Iowa, conveyed reservations about a diesel deal made with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which involved the U.S. administration issuing temporary licenses for Russian diesel imports for six months. Hinson expressed concern that the deal made her "nervous."

Beyond the Russian deal, Hinson suggested other remedies, including "investing in our refining capacity here in the United States that has gone by the wayside." She also called for exploring "a temporary pause in the gas tax" and "potentially a diesel rebate program" for sectors like farmers and truckers who depend heavily on diesel fuel for their livelihoods.

Hinson stated that she has observed the current administration taking steps to "reinvigorate America's energy independence again," while advocating for further measures such as a halt on the gas tax and a potential diesel rebate program.

The average price of regular gasoline was $2.81 per gallon in January. Under former President Joe Biden, the highest average U.S. gas price reached $5.02 in June 2022. However, a CNN analysis of AAA data indicates that the average gas price during Trump's second term has been $3.473 per gallon, compared to $3.471 under Biden, making the average slightly higher during Trump's presidency.
