Record-high spikes in gas prices, significantly exceeding historical averages for midterm election years, could pose a substantial challenge for Republicans in the upcoming 2026 elections, according to CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten. Enten noted that while gas prices typically rise during election years, the current surge is unprecedented for this century.

According to AAA, the average price of gas stood at $4.32 per gallon, representing a 52% increase compared to the average 18% hike seen in midterm cycles since 2000. "This is record-breaking," Enten stated on CNN's "News Central," emphasizing that the current rise is nearly double the previous record high of 27%.

Enten highlighted that the period between August 14 and September 14 of this year marked the first time in a midterm election year this century that gas prices increased during that specific timeframe. He described the situation as "killer stuff for congressional majorities."

The analyst also suggested that former President Donald Trump's arguments linking the price increases to specific foreign policy actions are not resonating with voters. The current gas price trend presents a significant hurdle for the GOP as they aim to retain or gain congressional seats in the 2026 midterms.
