Gary Neville Asks to Be Removed From Manchester City Commentary Amidst Financial Rule Breach Fallout
The Sky Sports pundit expressed difficulty in analyzing Manchester City's performances due to the ongoing legal proceedings regarding alleged financial rule violations.
Gary Neville, a commentator for Sky Sports, has requested to be taken off Manchester City's matches during the ongoing appeal process following the club's guilty verdict for serious breaches of Premier League financial rules. Neville stated on Sky Sports' Super Sunday that it is challenging to "eulogize" over the team, which secured a 3-0 victory against Liverpool at Anfield, with the controversy casting a shadow over their performances.
"This is the first Manchester City game that I have done today since the charges or guilty verdicts were handed out a few weeks ago," Neville said. "We were just doing the podcast then and said if you could take me off Manchester City games moving forward for the next few months until the verdicts have been heard, I would be absolutely delighted."
Neville elaborated that while the team's performance, particularly after Liverpool's Ryan Gravenberch received a red card in the 62nd minute, was commendable, the "thing in the back of your mind" regarding the potential consequences of the verdict makes objective commentary difficult. He noted that a confirmed guilty verdict could significantly alter the team's standing and potentially impact the entire league, which he described as "really bad for the Premier League."
Milan-based club City was found by an independent commission to have committed numerous breaches of financial rules over a nine-season period between 2009 and 2018. These alleged breaches include using "sham" commercial deals to disguise over £900 million in funding from its Abu Dhabi owners, which artificially inflated revenues and understated costs.
The club is currently appealing the verdict, and the appeal process is expected to be lengthy. If the verdict is upheld, Manchester City could face severe sanctions, including substantial fines, point deductions, transfer bans, or even expulsion from the Premier League.
Oasis frontman and Manchester City fan Liam Gallagher reacted to Neville's comments on social media, mocking the pundit and referring to him as a "cry baby." Gallagher also included Neville's Sky Sports colleague Jamie Carragher in his criticism, telling them to "take your Scouse mate with you."
Carragher, who was a pundit at the match, also weighed in on the situation, stating that if the verdict is upheld, Manchester City should not be allowed to win the league title this season. "Man City right now are the best team in the league, they are top of the league, but there is no way Man City can be allowed to win the league this year if they are found guilty," Carragher said. He emphasized the need for a resolution before the end of the current campaign.
Manachester City currently leads the Premier League table with a perfect record of six wins from six matches. Their recent victory over Liverpool saw goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, and Rayan Cherki.
