Garvaghy Road Investigation to Begin Next Week, DUP Leader States
Gavin Robinson expects a criminal inquiry into the unlawful blocking of a road to commence imminently, following a parading dispute that ended talks without agreement.
The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader, Gavin Robinson, has announced that a criminal investigation into the unlawful blocking of Garvaghy Road is anticipated to begin next week. The development follows a parading dispute where protesters obstructed the mainly nationalist road to prevent an Orange Order parade, leading to talks that concluded without a resolution.
Robinson emphasized the need for "consequences" for individuals acting as "law breakers." First Minister Michelle O'Neill was present at the protest, stating she understood the law but chose to "stand in solidarity" with residents. The DUP leader expects the investigation to proceed next week but stressed the importance of allowing it the necessary time to conclude.
The controversy surrounding the proposed Orange Order march, which faces opposition from Garvaghy Road residents, has persisted since Sunday morning. A legal challenge by residents aimed at halting the march, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed until Monday.
Efforts to resolve the deadlock continued Thursday night with Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant meeting with representatives from both the Orange Order and the Garvaghy Road Residents' Coalition at Hillsborough Castle. However, these discussions did not yield an agreement. Following the talks, Sir Chris described the end of the conversations as unfortunate but affirmed that his door remains open. Breándan Mac Cionnaith, chair of the Garvaghy Road Residents' Coalition, reported a "no meeting of minds," while Nigel Dawson, the Orange Order's Portadown district master, indicated the situation remained unchanged.
This dispute intensified after protesters blocked Garvaghy Road. The PSNI chief constable confirmed on Wednesday that an investigation would be launched. The Orange Order has maintained a presence at Drumcree church amidst the ongoing impasse.
