Garrett Whitlock Pitched Through Fractured Tibia for Red Sox
Boston pitcher diagnosed with a broken leg after postseason elimination, but the injury was previously undetected.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock pitched through the final month of the 2026 season with a fractured tibia, an injury that was not diagnosed until after the team's postseason elimination.
Whitlock, 30, received the diagnosis of a fractured right tibia following the Red Sox's exit from the playoffs. He had been experiencing leg discomfort throughout September but continued to pitch as Boston pushed for a postseason spot, ultimately reaching the American League wild-card series against the Yankees. Further evaluation after the series confirmed the fracture.
Despite the undiagnosed injury, Whitlock had a strong performance in September, making eight appearances. He pitched 7 ⅓ scoreless innings, recording nine strikeouts and two walks while allowing only six hits. His efforts contributed to Boston securing a playoff berth.
However, his postseason performance was significantly impacted. In just 1 ⅓ innings across his playoff appearances, Whitlock allowed three earned runs, resulting in an ERA of 20.25.
Reports indicate the Red Sox were aware of Whitlock's discomfort and worked with him to manage the pain, though the extent of the injury remained unknown. Fortunately, the fracture is not expected to require surgery. Whitlock is slated to wear a walking boot for four to six weeks to allow the bone to heal. He is anticipated to be ready for spring training next year, though uncertainty surrounds the start of the season due to potential labor disputes, including rumors of a lockout.
Whitlock concluded the regular season with a career-best 1.72 ERA over 54 appearances. He struck out 59 batters and issued just nine walks in 52 ⅓ innings. He also recorded a career-high 26 holds, serving as a key setup pitcher for closer Aroldis Chapman. This injury adds to a season that saw Whitlock previously spend time on the injured list for a left knee issue and later elbow inflammation.
Whitlock is currently under team control, with club options for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.
