Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly open to continuing his NFL career, with a return to the Los Angeles Rams as a potential option, a development that could affect quarterback Stetson Bennett's future with the team.
According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Garoppolo, 34, is willing to play again if the right opportunity arises, and Rams head coach Sean McVay has expressed openness to welcoming him back. "I love Jimmy. Would absolutely want him back," McVay stated earlier this year, noting Garoppolo's positive impact during his previous tenure.
The potential return of Garoppolo comes as the Rams also look to integrate rookie quarterback Ty Simpson, whom they selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. McVay has characterized the backup quarterback position as a competition between Simpson and Bennett, the latter a fourth-round pick from 2023 who has yet to play in a regular-season game.
If Simpson secures the No. 2 job and Garoppolo returns, Bennett could be sidelined. Garoppolo's experience would provide a veteran presence, a situation the Rams relied on when Matthew Stafford dealt with a back injury that sidelined him for part of training camp last year. Garoppolo's availability then allowed the team to manage Stafford's health without having to rush Bennett into action.
While Simpson is viewed as a long-term successor to Stafford, his development is considered crucial, and the team may be hesitant to expose him to significant playing time before he is ready, particularly in a competitive season. Garoppolo, who holds a 43-21 record as a starter and has extensive experience in the NFC West, could offer a stable bridge.
Other potential destinations for Garoppolo include the Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, and New England Patriots. A reunion with the San Francisco 49ers is also a possibility depending on their quarterback situation. Garoppolo may also wait to see if injuries create better starting opportunities later in the offseason or training camp. However, the Rams offer familiarity, a strong roster, and a coach who has publicly supported him.
