Gambling Tax Hike Sparks Fears for Seaside Arcades

Owners of seaside amusement arcades are expressing grave concerns over a potential increase in gambling taxes, warning that a "devastating" hike could threaten their businesses. The Chancellor is reportedly considering doubling the machine gaming duty to 40% in the upcoming Budget, a move primarily aimed at High Street bookmakers.

However, the increased levies could also significantly impact struggling pubs, bingo halls, and amusement arcades. Charles Holland, whose family operates seven arcades in the southwest of England, including one at Britain's shortest pier in Burnham-on-Sea, stated that doubling the tax would be "absolutely devastating."

Holland explained that unlike other businesses, arcades cannot adjust their prices because maximum stakes and prizes are government-regulated. "We would have to look at reduced opening hours and closures," he said, highlighting the fixed nature of their pricing structure. He further noted the vital role these arcades play in supporting small coastal economies, particularly during the leaner winter months, drawing a parallel to the arcade featured in the popular television series 'Gavin & Stacey'.

"We operate a responsible, affordable business. We just want to keep the status quo," Holland added.

A Treasury spokesperson stated, "The Chancellor is focused on his priorities – to give families and businesses a bit of breathing space, back British jobs and drive growth in every postcode."
