Gael Monfils Defends Wife Elina Svitolina Amid 'Venomous' Reaction to Separation News

Tennis player Gael Monfils has publicly defended his wife, Elina Svitolina, following her announcement earlier this week that the couple is separating. Monfils addressed the public reaction to Svitolina's statement on Instagram, describing it as "venomous" and "unkind."

Svitolina had cited the ongoing war between her native Ukraine and Russia as a significant factor in her decision, stating in her own Instagram post that she "didn't want to keep living a life where I wasn’t truly happy." She also revealed that the separation had led to Monfils retiring from tennis slightly earlier than planned.

Monfils, 40, explained in his post that navigating the end of a relationship involves complex emotions. "A separation is a minefield of messy, complicated feelings that Elina and I are both trying our best to navigate, and we are doing so with the great respect and love that we still, and will always, hold for each other," he wrote.

He praised Svitolina for her honesty and vulnerability in sharing her reasons, noting that she was not obligated to provide an explanation. "Many decided that her explanation wasn’t perfect enough, and Elina has now faced a kind of criticism that I have found unkind at best, and venomous at worst," Monfils stated.

Monfils highlighted the lack of "grace and kindness" directed at Svitolina, calling it "upsetting" that some dismissed or discredited her reasons for ending the relationship. He emphasized that personal relationships involve many unseen factors.

"While some may not understand her reasons, or agree with them, please remember that there is so much more that happens in a relationship behind the curtain that cannot be explained in a post," he wrote. "Elina has her battles to fight, just as I have mine. I respect her choices and reasons, and we will continue to support and care deeply about each other, especially as two people who share a child."

The couple married in 2021 and have a 4-year-old daughter together. Monfils' decision to retire from tennis after his second-round U.S. Open loss in September, rather than at the planned Paris Masters next month, was attributed to their personal situation.
