Gabby Petito's Mother Criticizes 'Armchair Detectives' for Exploiting Daughter's Death

Nichole Schmidt, the mother of Gabby Petito, has expressed frustration with online commentators she calls "armchair detectives" who continue to spread speculation and conspiracy theories about her daughter's death five years after the crime. Petito, a 22-year-old travel vlogger, was fatally strangled by her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, in August 2021.

Despite a confession from Laundrie, who subsequently died by suicide, Schmidt stated in an interview with The Mirror US that online speculation persists, with some theories falsely suggesting Laundrie is still alive or that the entire incident was staged. "I wish it was fake. I wish that my daughter was still here," Schmidt said, emphasizing the hurtful nature of these unfounded claims, which she still encounters regularly.

Petito and Laundrie had been traveling across the western United States in a van, documenting their journey on social media, when the incident occurred. On August 12, 2021, police in Moab, Utah, responded to a domestic dispute call. Bodycam footage from the incident showed a distressed Petito, but officers classified it as a mental health issue rather than domestic assault, leading to the couple being separated for the night instead of an arrest.

Petito was last seen alive on August 25, 2021, in Jackson, Wyoming. Laundrie returned to his parents' home in North Port, Florida, alone on September 1. Petito's family reported her missing on September 11 after being unable to contact her and receiving no information from Laundrie's family.

Petito's body was discovered on September 19 at Grand Teton National Park. An autopsy later confirmed she had been strangled. Following the discovery, the U.S. District Court of Wyoming issued a warrant for Laundrie's arrest.

Laundrie's skeletal remains were found in a Florida nature park on October 20, along with a notebook containing a confession. "I ended her life. I thought it was merciful, that it is what she wanted, but I see now all the mistakes I made," Laundrie wrote in the recovered notebook, as detailed by the FBI.

The Gabby Petito Foundation, established by Petito's family, continues to advocate for missing persons and domestic violence prevention.
