Donations to support the families of two police officers killed in a head-on collision on the A66 have surpassed £1 million within three days. The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, also claimed the lives of the five occupants of a Volkswagen Passat.
Cleveland Police established a GoFundMe appeal on Sunday to assist the grieving families of PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38. The fund quickly exceeded its seven-figure target. A separate appeal by Pocket Sergeant has also raised an additional £48,000.
The force described the fallen officers as "dedicated and committed Police Officers who left their families and went to work to serve their community and protect the public." The tribute stated, "Tragedy struck these two brave Cleveland Police colleagues in the early hours of 22nd August 2026 - and they paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty."
PC Matthew Blades, a father of two, and PC Tom Clough, 38, died when their police vehicle was hit head-on by a Volkswagen Passat. The collision occurred approximately ten seconds after a police pursuit of the Passat had been called off.
The five individuals in the Passat were identified as Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Cole Robert Worthy, 17, Jakub Matusiak, 23, and Makai Saddington, 18.
It is understood that the incident was preceded by an attack on the father of Cole Worthy. A rival gang allegedly used a Volvo XC60 to ram his home in Middlesbrough approximately 40 minutes before the fatal crash. The Volvo reportedly reversed into the front window of the house, causing significant damage.
Following the incident at his father's home, Cole Worthy and his companions were reportedly in the VW Passat, seeking out those responsible. Police have suggested that the collision may be linked to organized crime and feuds between criminal factions in the Teesside area.
Cleveland Police confirmed that both the Volvo and the VW Passat were part of their investigation. The Volvo XC60 involved in the property ramming has been traced and recovered. The Passat was observed on CCTV traveling at speeds between 80 and 100 mph, pursued by police vehicles, before it turned onto the A66 dual carriageway in the wrong direction.
Authorities have made multiple arrests in connection with the events. As of Tuesday, 17 individuals had been detained. These include a 16-year-old boy, four men aged 18, 21, 23, and 55, arrested on suspicion of participating in an organized crime group or assisting an offender. Previous arrests of 12 individuals included charges related to organized crime and firearm possession. Two individuals, Kai Beattie, 19, and Cameron George, 26, have appeared in court on charges of firearms and drugs offenses, respectively.
