Fujifilm has reintroduced a beloved piece of nostalgia with the launch of its instax mini 99, a reimagined instant camera that blends retro design with contemporary technology. The new matte silver edition offers a premium analogue experience, tapping into a resurgence of interest in instant photography fueled by younger generations on social media.
The instax mini 99 features built-in LED lights that create six distinct analog color effects directly on the film. Photography enthusiasts can select from options such as Soft Magenta, Sepia, Light Leak, Warm Tone, Faded Green, or a standard Normal mode. The camera also includes a Brightness Control Dial with five levels, allowing users to adjust exposure from L+ to D-. These features, combined with creative shooting modes, enable users to tailor each shot to their desired aesthetic.
Beyond color and brightness, the mini 99 offers several creative functions. Vignette Mode allows for darkening the edges of a photo for a moodier effect. Bulb Mode keeps the shutter open for up to 10 seconds, suitable for capturing light trails or night scenes. Double Exposure mode enables the overlap of two images onto a single print. Additionally, specific modes like Indoor Mode, Landscape/Macro Mode, and Sports Mode cater to different shooting conditions and subjects.
The camera's design incorporates a vintage-inspired look with a leather-look finish and silver accents on the lens and dials. It features two shutter buttons—one for landscapes and one for portraits—designed for easier handling. A removable, USB-rechargeable battery offers convenience for on-the-go use, complementing its role as a travel companion. The inclusion of a tripod mount further enhances its versatility for self-portraits and group shots.
Mary Georgievski, General Manager of Photographic Imaging at FUJIFILM Australia, stated that the silver edition builds on the demand for premium analogue photography. "The instax mini 99 has been incredibly popular with consumers looking for an instant camera that offers both creative flexibility and premium design," she said. "The new silver edition gives photographers another way to express their personal style while delivering the same distinctive analogue shooting experience that makes every instax print one of a kind."
Since its debut in 1998, the instax series has evolved to include hybrid models and smartphone printers, appealing to a broad audience in over 100 countries. The instax mini 99, first launched in April 2024 in black, has received positive feedback, with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Shoppers have praised its photo quality, creative filter modes, and premium feel, with many citing it as an ideal gift or a welcome upgrade from older models.
The instax mini 99 in the new silver edition is available at major Australian retailers, including Amazon Australia, JB Hi-Fi, Myer, and Good Guys.
