Fugitive Prisoner Appears in Irish Court After Escaping to Attend Funeral

Gary Anderson, 29, a prisoner serving a life sentence for murder, appeared in Letterkenny District Court on Thursday after being arrested by Irish police. Anderson had absconded 10 days prior after being granted leave to attend his father's funeral in Northern Ireland.

Anderson was arrested on Wednesday at a campsite near Buncrana in County Donegal. He is charged with being present at Fahan Marina caravan and campsite on September 23, having escaped from Maghaberry Prison, contrary to Section 3(1) of the Criminal Law (Jurisdiction) Act 1976.

During the court hearing, Garda Detective Jason Conroy detailed the arrest, charge, and caution. Anderson was apprehended at approximately 1:44 PM local time and informed of the reason for his arrest, to which he made no reply. He was formally charged at 8:47 PM and again made no reply.

No bail application was made on Anderson's behalf. Garda Sergeant Jim Collins informed the court that directions were being sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and that Anderson should be remanded in custody. Judge Emile Daly adjourned the case, with Anderson set to appear via video link later this month.

Anderson's solicitor requested that the judge recommend a prison other than Castlerea Prison in County Roscommon for his client's remand, citing the involvement of "other parties."
