Fugitive Immigrant Trucker Wanted in Fatal California Crash Arrested in Utah

An Indian national, Chamkaur Singh, 30, who is wanted in connection with a fatal March 29 crash in California, was arrested in Moab, Utah, on September 1. A Moab Police Department officer stopped Singh for allegedly driving 50 mph in a 30 mph zone while operating a semi-truck.

During the traffic stop, an officer discovered a nationwide, no-bail warrant for vehicular manslaughter issued by the California Highway Patrol on April 4. Singh was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Grand County Jail. The semi-truck he was driving was impounded.

The Department of Homeland Security stated that Singh is an undocumented immigrant. ICE placed an immigration detainer against him the day after his arrest in Utah. According to DHS, Singh reported entering the U.S. in August 2021 near Arizona after traveling from India through South and Central America. U.S. Border Patrol reportedly apprehended him after his entry, but he was subsequently released.

DHS further reported that Singh was issued a California commercial driver’s license on May 10, 2025, which remained active at the time of his arrest. His commercial driving record reportedly includes three prior convictions for speeding, following too closely, and improper lane usage.

The California Highway Patrol stated that Singh's truck struck the back of a car during the March 29 incident, killing one passenger and critically injuring another. The semi-truck then collided with a second vehicle, resulting in a second fatality. The multi-vehicle crash ultimately involved seven vehicles, injured two other people, and led to charges against Singh.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized immigration policies and California's sanctuary policies in response to the arrest. Singh is awaiting extradition to California.
