Fugitive Firefighter Accused of Faking Death on FBI Most Wanted List
Authorities are investigating the possibility that a former Bay Area firefighter, indicted on child pornography charges, staged his own drowning.
Federal authorities are investigating the potential that Charles Johnathen Harris, a former Alameda County firefighter wanted on child pornography charges, faked his own death. Harris, 46, has been placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, with officials announcing Tuesday that he may still be alive.
Harris, who resides in Modesto, California, was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 2, 2023, for possession of child pornography. Prosecutors alleged that Harris possessed images of child pornography on his iPhone, including depictions of prepubescent children. At the time of his indictment, he was 42 years old and faced a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
A federal arrest warrant was issued for Harris on April 21, 2023, after he failed to appear in court. Just over a month after his initial indictment, Harris was reported to have drowned in a boating accident in Suisun Bay, California, on April 4, 2023.
Investigators are now scrutinizing Harris’ death, considering the possibility that it was staged. Legal analyst Steven Clark told NBC Bay Area that the case may be resurfacing due to possible sightings of the suspect, noting the difficulty of remaining undetected in the current era.
The initial indictment stemmed from a tip received by federal authorities from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip indicated that Harris was allegedly uploading child pornography on the social platform Kik, with these alleged activities occurring while he was employed at fire stations in Alameda County.
Harris was initially released on bond with the condition that his internet access would be restricted, according to prosecutors.
Officials at the Alameda County Fire Department stated they have no updates regarding their former employee. Harris is also believed to use the aliases Chuck Harris or Charlie Harris, according to investigators.
The FBI is asking anyone with information about Harris’ whereabouts to contact their local FBI office, the nearest American Embassy or Consulate, or to submit a tip through the FBI’s website.
