Police in Ramapo, New York, responded to an unusual call Saturday morning when an emu escaped from a local petting zoo. The bird made its break at approximately 8:45 a.m. on September 12.
The Ramapo Police Department utilized a Skydio drone to track the emu's movements from the air while coordinating with officers on the ground. The emu was eventually found roaming a roadside.
A video shared by the police department shows officers surrounding the bird and attempting to capture it with a rope harness. The emu initially evaded the first attempt, continuing its unauthorized excursion through the town. It took a third attempt before officers were able to safely detain the animal.
The emu was then safely escorted back to the petting zoo without incident. The police department later posted on social media about the incident, joking, "We don't know why the chicken crossed the road, but the emu crossed the road because Sgt Anton didn't give it an option." They added that the drone was instrumental in tracking the bird and that Sgt. Anton "ultimately made it very clear that its unauthorized tour of Ramapo was officially over."
Authorities confirmed that there were no injuries reported, and no citations were issued. The department also noted, "No word yet on whether it plans to escape again."
