Fugitive Chef Arrested in San Diego After 14 Years on the Run
US Marshals apprehended Brian Anthony Williams, wanted in Iowa for kidnapping and shooting, who had built a new life as a popular chef in California.
A fugitive wanted for nearly 14 years in connection with the kidnapping, assault, and shooting of a woman in Iowa was arrested Tuesday in San Diego, California. U.S. Marshals apprehended Brian Anthony Williams, 50, at Miss B's Coconut Club in Mission Beach, where he had been working under the alias "Troy Williams."
Williams had been wanted since 2012 after he and others allegedly kidnapped, assaulted, and shot a woman before abandoning her in a field in northwest Davenport, Iowa. He faced charges including first-degree kidnapping, assault causing serious injury, conspiracy to commit a felony, and first-degree arson. Federal authorities also charged him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
For over eight years, Williams worked at Miss B's Coconut Club, becoming a well-known figure and even appearing in local media. A profile in the Times of San Diego described his rise from line cook to head chef, during which he spoke about overcoming adversity and the importance of kindness. However, these public appearances may have inadvertently led to his capture.
According to a U.S. Marshals spokesperson, an individual recognized Williams from a media interview and alerted authorities. This tip led investigators to the restaurant, where federal agents had been developing information about Williams living under an assumed identity. He was arrested without incident at the restaurant on Mission Boulevard.
"This arrest is a perfect example of those who think they have bested law enforcement and evaded arrest," stated U.S. Marshal Ted Kamatchus. Williams' coworkers expressed shock and disbelief upon learning of his alleged past.
Williams remains in federal custody pending extradition to Iowa to face prosecution for the 2012 attack. The U.S. Marshals Service and management at Miss B's Coconut Club did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
