Fuel Leak in River Taff Stops After Causing Fish Deaths
Officials have confirmed that a fuel leak impacting the River Taff has been stopped, following an investigation into its source and environmental impact.
Officials from Natural Resources Wales (NRW) have announced that the source of a fuel leak that affected the River Taff has been stopped. The pollution, which had been impacting the river since October 16 in areas including Nantgarw, Treforest, and Taffs Well, was identified on Friday evening.
GE Aerospace had previously confirmed that fuel entered the river during repair work at its nearby site. NRW stated that its officers are continuing to investigate how the fuel entered the drainage system and subsequently reached the river.
According to NRW, the investigation found fewer than 10 dead fish and some impacts to aquatic invertebrates as a result of the leak. The source was identified at 7:30 p.m. BST on Friday, by which time the kerosene had spread nearly 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) downstream. Evidence is currently being compiled and reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. Reports of pollution affecting the Taff in Glan Y Llyn, Gwaelod-y-garth, and Tongwynlais were also received by the environmental body.
