Fuel Costs Hamper Volunteer Recruitment for Meal Delivery Services

Rising fuel costs are presenting a significant challenge for organizations seeking volunteers to deliver meals to vulnerable populations. Maureen Bougeard, representing Meals on Wheels Jersey, stated that the organization has received £38,000 from the Jersey Community Foundation to support its work in providing hot meals to islanders unable to cook for themselves.

The service delivers meals to approximately 100 individuals four days a week. However, Bougeard noted that the increasing cost of petrol is deterring potential recruits. "Very often volunteers say, you know, 'the petrol's getting expensive'," she explained. "We're looking for new volunteers and I send the information out which says 'you drive your car at your own expense' and I don't hear from them again."

Meals on Wheels Jersey relies entirely on its volunteer base, with over 200 individuals currently contributing their time. The organization has no paid staff. Some of these volunteers drive the length of the island twice daily to ensure meal deliveries are completed. The majority of the volunteers are retired individuals, many of whom continue to volunteer despite potential financial constraints associated with rising expenses. M
