After a career spanning decades in the automotive industry, Mark O'Neill has transitioned to a new profession as a nail technician, opening a salon called Nail Therapy in Swords, Co. Dublin. O'Neill, who began working in mechanics at age 13, was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, a type of rheumatoid arthritis, which made it impossible to continue in his previous role.

O'Neill's journey into the beauty industry began unexpectedly during the COVID-19 pandemic. With women in his household, he started assisting with hair dyeing and nail painting, discovering a talent and enjoyment for the meticulous work. This led him to pursue formal training, though traditional college courses were challenging due to his dyslexia. He found a tutor in Joanna Figasinka, who became his business partner.

"It can flare up at any time and can be quite debilitating," O'Neill said about his health condition. "But setting up Nail Therapy means I’ve got that spark back." He views his new career as a transfer of skills from his previous work, emphasizing precision and creativity.

Nail Therapy offers manicures and pedicures for both men and women. O'Neill noted that while some clients are initially surprised to see a man performing nail services, the support has been strong, with many returning customers. Figasinka, an award-winning nail artist, saw O'Neill's potential as a student and the business opportunity.

O'Neill's transition has been a significant life change, impacting his family, including his daughter, who initially found the shift unusual. However, she has since allowed him to do her nails. The salon aims to provide a relaxing and personalized experience for clients, with O'Neill encouraging nurturing of natural nails and enjoying creative nail art. He also mentioned that clients are sometimes requesting elaborate designs inspired by AI, which requires careful execution.

His business partner, Joanna Figasinka, is the country's representative for Magnetic Nail Design, a brand they both utilize at their salon. They focus on high standards of hygiene and artistic expertise.

O'Neill's career change at nearly 50, despite his health challenges, serves as an inspiration, demonstrating a pursuit of passion and a successful reinvention. He believes that if he can change careers at his age, others can too.
