Alana Thompson, known to fans as Honey Boo Boo, is celebrating her 21st birthday this week, marking a significant personal transformation from her early days as a child pageant contestant to her current path as a pediatric intensive care nurse. Thompson first gained national attention on the TLC series Toddlers & Tiaras before starring in her own spin-off, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, which premiered in 2012.
The family's reality television career was marked by controversy. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo was canceled in 2014 amid allegations concerning Thompson's mother, June Shannon. Later, Shannon starred in her own series, Mama June: Family Crisis, which chronicled her struggles with crack cocaine addiction. Thompson's mother eventually achieved sobriety and is now married to Justin Stroud. Thompson has spoken about the difficulty of forgiving her mother for past actions but has worked to rebuild their relationship, stating that she no longer has expectations for her.
A Sister's Loss and Legal Guardianship
The family also experienced a profound loss when Alana's older sister, Anna 'Chickadee' Cardwell, died in December 2023 at the age of 29 after a battle with stage four adrenal cancer. Thompson shared a heartfelt tribute to her sister on social media.
During her mother's struggles with addiction, Thompson was granted legal custody by her older sister, Lauryn 'Pumpkin' Efird, and her husband, Josh Efird, in 2022. Thompson has described facing difficult comments about her mother's public struggles in school.
Pursuing a Nursing Career
Thompson is currently studying nursing at Regis University in Denver and working as a Patient Care Technician in pediatrics at a local hospital in Colorado. She is on track to graduate next year and has expressed a desire to excel in her studies. Thompson told Teen Vogue that she aims to do something significant with her life beyond television and that she is persevering to become the nurse she wants to be.
She also spoke about her future aspirations, including starting a family with her partner, Dralin Carswell, whom she met in 2021. However, she indicated that she would be hesitant to put her own children on television due to her past experiences with intense public scrutiny. Thompson stated she would prefer to wait until her children are old enough to make their own decisions about participating in public life.
