As the investigation into the unsolved murder of Brooke Hanlon stretches into its second month, a close friend is sharing new details about the slain New Jersey mother's life. Hanlon, a 35-year-old therapist, was found fatally stabbed inside her Chester home on June 6.

Nearly eight weeks later, authorities have yet to name a suspect or person of interest in the homicide case. Jennifer Payne, Hanlon's graduate school friend and former roommate, described the ongoing investigation as "confusing, heartbreaking, and incredibly frustrating." Payne shared photos of Hanlon from their time together in Boston and subsequent years, stating that the lack of information leaves her mind racing.

Brooke Hanlon and her husband, James "Conor" Hanlon, met in Boston in 2014 while Hanlon was enrolled at Northeastern University. She graduated in May 2015 with a master of science in counseling psychology and began her professional career as a therapist in the Boston area that July. The couple married in Montauk, New York, on June 12, 2021. They purchased a home in Chester, New Jersey, on Sept. 13, 2024, and welcomed their first child, a daughter, in July 2025.

Emergency personnel responded to the Hanlon residence on June 6, 2026, after Conor Hanlon called 911 to report his wife was "not breathing" and had a "laceration" on her chest. The initial dispatch was for a medical response to a "cardiac arrest." On June 13, 2026, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office announced the death was being investigated as a homicide, with the medical examiner confirming the cause of death as "multiple sharp force injuries."

Chester Township Mayor Tim Drag issued a statement extending condolences to the victim's family and stating that he would not comment on specific facts to protect the investigation's integrity.

Authorities announced a reward of up to $1,000 for information aiding the investigation on July 1, 2026. Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) logs obtained by Fox News Digital revealed extensive investigative activity at the Pottersville Road property from June 6 through June 12, including rotations of detectives, crime scene units, and evidence processing.

Conor Hanlon retained legal counsel, and the Morris County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Unit has maintained communication with his attorney, Fox News Digital confirmed on July 8, 2026. The following day, Conor Hanlon was photographed in Boston's Brighton neighborhood. On July 10, officials released the full 6-minute, 36-second 911 call made by Conor Hanlon, during which he can be heard in distress and guided through CPR compressions by dispatchers, noting, "there's blood everywhere."

Neighbors observed Conor's white SUV parked outside the Chester home for several hours on July 13, marking one of the first visible returns to the residence since the murder. On July 22, Fox News Digital reported on the growing unease among Chester residents nearly seven weeks after the slaying, with neighbors describing themselves as hyper-vigilant. On July 31, Jennifer Payne shared new photos of Brooke from their grad school years, expressing frustration over the lack of progress in the investigation.

Payne emphasized that her primary concern is honoring Brooke Hanlon's memory and ensuring her young daughter knows how loved her mother was. "More than anything, I hope they know how deeply Brooke was loved and how wonderful of a family they were to her," Payne told Fox News Digital. "I want them, especially Brooke’s daughter, to remember her beautiful and full life, that I was so grateful to be part of, and not just the ending to it."
